বাংলার বৈচিত্র্যময় ইতিহাসের আরেক নিদর্শন হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করা যায় ত্রিবেণীর এই মসজিদকে। হুগলির অন্তর্গত ত্রিবেণী একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জনপদ। ভাগীরথী-যমুনা-সরস্বতীর মিলনস্থল হওয়াতে জায়গাটির ভৌগলিক গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। এছাড়াও সংস্কৃত শিক্ষার মূল কেন্দ্র হিসাবে সেই সময়ে নবদ্বীপ, ভাটপাড়া, গুপ্তিপাড়া ও ত্রিবেণী বিশেষ প্রসিদ্ধি লাভ করেছিল। এই ত্রিবেণীরই শাসনকর্তা জাফর খাঁ গাজী ১২৯৮ থেকে ১৩১৩, দীর্ঘ পনেরো বছর অঞ্চলটিতে তার শাসন চালান প্রথম মুসলমান শাসক হিসেবে।
শাসনকালের সূচনাতেই তিনি প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন বাংলার সর্বপ্রাচীন মসজিদ। যা ‘জাফর খাঁ গাজীর মসজিদ’ নামে তা পরিচিত হয় ওঠে সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে। ১৩১৫ সালে মসজিদের পাশেই গঠিত হয় দরগা। উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে এই মসজিদ এবং দরগাতেই ধরা পড়েছে হিন্দু-মুসলিম সম্প্রীতির এক বিরল নিদর্শন। ঐতিহাসিকের মতে, পুরনো হিন্দু মন্দির ধ্বংস করে জাফর খান এই মসজিদ তৈরি করেন। সেই মসজিদের গঙ্গার অভিমুখে অবস্থিত পাঁচিলগুলোতে আজও দেখা যায় বহু হিন্দু দেবদেবীর প্রতিকৃতি অঙ্কন। এছাড়াও পরবর্তীকালে নির্মিত দরগার খিলানেও দেখতে পাওয়া যায় বহু মূর্তি। শুধু তাই নয়, দরগার ভিতরে অবস্থিত সমাধি কক্ষে বেশ কয়েকটি সংস্কৃত শিলালিপিও দেখা গিয়েছে। রামায়ণ ও মহাভারতের বিভিন্ন ঘটনা আঁকা ও পরিচয় লেখা রয়েছে সেখানে। জাফর খান প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই দরগায় রয়েছে বিষ্ণুমূর্তি, বুদ্ধমূর্তি ও জৈন তীর্থঙ্কর পার্শ্বনাথের মূর্তি, যা চার ধর্মের মিলনভুমি হিসেবেও উল্লেখ্য। এমন আশ্চর্য সর্ব ধর্ম সম্বনয় নিয়ে কাজ করেছেন বিশ্বের বাঘা ঐতিহাসিক। ‘কেমব্রিজ হিস্ট্রি অব ইন্ডিয়া’ বইয়ের তৃতীয় খণ্ডে এ প্রসঙ্গে বলা হয়েছে, “Curiously enough, it is not at Gaur, but at Tribeni in the Hughli District, that the oldest remains of Muslim buildings have survived. জাফর খান কিন্তু তার নিজের জীবনেও হিন্দু-মুসলিম ঐক্য ঘটিয়েছিলেন। জাফরের তৃতীয় পুত্র বর খাঁ গাজী বিবাহ করেছিলেন হুগলি নিবাসী এক হিন্দু মহিলাকে।  ত্রিবেণীতে অবস্থিত এই দরগায় তাঁর, তার পুত্রদের এবং তৃতীয় পুত্রের হিন্দু স্ত্রী, হুগলির রাজকন্যার সমাধি এখনও দেখা যায়। জাফর খাঁ-র এই পুত্রবধূ ছিলেন গঙ্গাদেবীর ভক্ত। তাঁর প্রভাবেই জাফর খাঁ গঙ্গার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাবান হয়েছিলেন। এমনকি জাফর খাঁ গঙ্গাদেবীর পূজাও করতেন যা শুনলে চমকে যেতেই পারেন। তবে এখানেই শেষ নয়, জাফর খাঁ সংস্কৃত শ্লোক বলাও আয়ত্ত করেছিলেন তার পুত্রবধূর থেকে। তিনি প্রায়শই এই শ্লোকটি আওড়াতেন,
“যৎতক্ত্যং জননী-গণৈর্ষদপি ন স্পৃষ্টং সুহৃদ্বান্ধবৈ-
যস্মিন পান্থ দিগন্ত সন্নিপতিতে তৈ স্মর্য্যতে শ্রীহরি।
স্বাষ্কে নস্য তদীদৃশং বপুরহো সংনীয়তে পৌরুষং
ত্বং তাবৎ করুণাপরায়ণপরা মাতাসু ভাগীরথী।”
শ্লোকটি বেদব্যাস রচিত গঙ্গাষ্টক স্তোত্র হলেও তার মুখে প্রচার পাওয়ায় সকলে এটি তার লেখা বলেই মনে করতো ।
৭২১ বছর আগে হুগলির গঙ্গা তীরবর্তী ত্রিবেণীতে এমনই এক ইতিহাস রচিত হয়েছিল মুসলিম শাসকের হাত ধরে। চণ্ডীমঙ্গল কাব্যের রচয়িতা মুকুন্দরাম চক্রবর্তীও সেই প্রসঙ্গে লিখেছিলেন,
“পাজোয়ায় বন্দিয়া যাবো শুভি খাঁ পীরে।
দফর খাঁ গাজীরে বন্দো ত্রিবেণীর ধারে।।”
